European beech (Fagus sylvatica)

The European beech is one of the most important and most beautiful trees of European forests. It reaches 30–45 meters and forms a wide, dense and very elegant crown that looks harmonious in both landscapes and parks.
Its leaves are oval, smooth, and glossy, changing shades throughout the season from fresh green to bronze — giving the beech a strong aesthetic effect from spring to autumn. The smooth, grey, straight trunk is a characteristic feature that looks clean and highly representative.

Natural range

The beech is native to western, central, and southern Europe, where it forms extensive beech forests. In natural stands, it often becomes the dominant species that defines the character of the entire ecosystem.
It thrives in areas with higher air humidity, in semi-shaded valleys, and on slopes with sufficient moisture.

Recommended uses

Beech is an excellent choice for representative and nature-oriented plantings:

✔ large parks and forest parks
✔ solitary plantings in gardens
✔ naturalistic forest plantings

✘ unsuitable for city streets — it poorly tolerates drought, dusty environments, and road salting

In the landscape, it looks natural and gives the space a noble, stable character.

When to plant

For beech, the ideal time is:

  • autumn sowing or planting, when young plants have enough moisture and can root before winter.

Growing conditions

Beech is a species with clearly defined requirements:

  • needs deep, fertile, well-drained soils

  • requires good air humidity — mildly moist regions are ideal

  • poorly tolerates extreme heat and prolonged drought

  • thrives in partial shade or full sun as long as moisture is sufficient

In suitable conditions, it is a long-lived and very stable tree.

Ecological benefits

The European beech is a key species of European habitats:

  • it dominates natural beech forests, which belong to the most valuable ecosystems in Europe

  • provides habitat for many animals, from birds to specialized insects

  • beech nuts are an important food source for forest wildlife — birds, small mammals, and large game

  • improves the forest microclimate, stabilizes slopes, and supports healthy soil life

It is a tree of essential importance for biodiversity and the ecological stability of the European landscape.
