B2B inquiry

Manilkara huberi, known as massaranduba, is one of the most resilient and durable trees of the Amazon rainforest. It is renowned for its exceptionally strong wood, among the hardest in the world. However, this very quality has led to a significant decline in its numbers — the species is now diminishing in many regions and requires active restoration.

Status

Declining population
(locally endangered in areas with intensive logging)

Why is it disappearing?

Uncontrolled logging
In many parts of the Amazon, the species is heavily harvested without sufficient forest regeneration.

Extremely hard, highly valued wood
Massaranduba is used for flooring, construction, bridges, and outdoor structures → demand is very high.

Importance for the ecosystem

  • its massive crown creates a stable microclimate in the lower layers of the rainforest

  • its fruits serve as food for birds, monkeys, and small mammals

  • it is a long-lived species → anchors the forest structure for decades to centuries

  • an important tree for maintaining the biodiversity of humid tropical forests

Massaranduba is an ecological pillar of mature rainforest stands.

Appearance

  • Height: 30–45 m

  • Trunk: straight, thick, dark, often branchless in the lower section

  • Crown: broad and dense

  • Leaves: leathery, dark green

  • Fruits: small edible berries, used by many animals

Where and how to plant

Massaranduba is planted only in tropical regions with sufficient humidity.

✔ Ideal regions

  • Brazil (Amazonas, Pará, Acre)

  • Colombia

  • Peru

  • Guyana

✔ How to plant

  • in moist, deep, nutrient-rich soils

  • young plants require partial shade, later full sun

  • protection from fire and browsing is necessary during the first years

  • a suitable tree for reforestation projects that require a strong, long-lived species

When to plant

During the rainy season (December–March).

Why plant it

  • supports the return of massive tropical hardwood species that are disappearing from the rainforest

  • contributes to the restoration of biodiversity and climate stability

  • stabilizes ecosystems and provides shelter for many species

  • planting increases the chance that this valuable species will survive for future generations
